I’ll be 50 next week and as part of my celebration

I’ll be 50 next week and as part of my celebration somewhere along the line, I decided that I wanted to create a work of art. This is the largest scale project I’ve ever taken on and I’m really proud of how it’s coming out and I’m glad that I took the risk to try something new!!

It certainly has not been a smooth or easy process, but I’m really doing my best to just trust.

During my trauma healing journey I created a prolific amount of #art probably over 100 pieces and at one point I was doing at least three or four pieces a week on a very small scale with oil crayons, which I really enjoyed and slowly, I started adding an elements in collage, which I really enjoyed so this project is kind of a combination of everything that I learned and it’s also a sacred prayer And a living manifestation.

originally, I was planning on having a butterfly as the centerpiece to represent transformation, but as it evolved and I started collecting the pieces which you can see in the photos on the table, I had so many trinkets and elements that really were more suited to representing something you would place on an altar and something that would represent my past and also my future I knew that I wanted to incorporate poetry and pages from my book and as the project evolved I had some great feedback from a couple of friends who are beautiful artists it continue to morph into what it is today.

Our bodies…hold so much of our trauma. So many stories that are not ours, things we took on from family, culture, society…

Our bodies protect us in ways that may not always be the best for us in the long term. This week on our Wednesday night sister circle call, (yes tonight) we will be delving into our relationship with our body as a part & “how the body keeps the score”.

A term made famous by a leading trauma expert Bessel Van Der Kolk…The book explains how traumatic stress impacts memory, emotions, and physical health, leading to conditions like chronic stress and pain And the brain and body connection: It details how trauma literally reshapes the brain and body, affecting a person’s capacity for trust, pleasure, and self-control.

Typically when I look at photos I go straight to critic, the love handles, back fat, cellulite or wrinkles… how old I am getting. How I am no longer as young or beautiful or slim as I once was.
I have been working very consciously to try to meet myself where I am at. I am 50 next month and this body has held me through so much. I am only just now really getting to know her and stay in her rather than leave and dissociate.

Now, I try really hard to stop that critic in seconds and switch to seeing myself through more loving eyes, just as I would of a friend or lover. To see her laugh lines, her jiggly bits & in perfection as beauty & wisdom.

As a child I was so skinny. I was called anorexic, surf board, ironing board, spaghetti legs…I didn’t develop breasts till 22, yes a late bloomer.… continue part two in the comments below…
